Quiet tape

Botswana's mid-October De Beers call passes undecided, and the board holds quiet since September's RAPI

Polished

The board is quiet again after yesterday's tariff headline, with no new index this morning. Rapaport's September RAPI remains the last print, the 0.50-carat grade up 2.5% and the 1-carat up 0.3% for the month, so inventory valuations stand where September left them. The next readings that could move them are the De Beers October sight, running 26 to 30 October, and the October RAPI in early November.

Demand and macro

The rupee is holding its turn at 94.96 to the dollar, firmer by 1.83% on the week and still through the 1.5% line that matters for quoting. That looks like the sustained move we flagged on 15 October rather than a one-week blip, and it keeps pressure on Indian exporters' dollar receipts. Read September's Indian trade data alongside it with care. The headline grew 9.43% to $2.95 billion (GJEPC), but cut-and-polished natural diamonds came in at $1.29 billion, down 5.44% year on year. The lift is in gold and lab-grown goods, not natural stones, so the quiet board reflects natural-diamond demand that has not yet turned rather than a pause in a recovery.

From the field

The contest for De Beers is widening rather than resolving. We noted on 24 September that Botswana's review was reported to be nearing a late-September deadline, and logged a call for a public decision by mid-October; that date has now passed with the talks still open. JCK reports Botswana moving to raise its holding, while Richemont and Signet are said to be in talks to join the consortium bidding for Anglo American's stake. For sightholders the live question is 2027 allocation and terms once ownership settles, not this morning's price. The nearest places the trade gathers are next week, JA New York Fall on 25 to 27 October and the Dubai Diamond Conference on 26 to 27 October.
