Mixed signalsA seventh quiet session on the board, but the rupee breaks the calm, firming 1.6% on the week to 95.16 per dollar as JIS Fall opens in Miami tomorrow
The board still sits where the September RAPI left it when it printed on October 6, the small end leading with the 0.50ct index up 2.5% for the month against a slim 0.3% at one carat, and a seventh session has now passed without extending or reversing that read. Nothing this week moves the board before the October RAPI lands in early November.
The rupee is the one variable that cleared the line this week, strengthening 1.6% to 95.16 per dollar by October 14 over three straight sessions, the first macro reading to pass the 1.5% weekly threshold since this quiet stretch began. For Surat that erodes the advantage a weak rupee had been giving, as imported rough costs a little less in rupee terms while USD export receipts now convert to fewer rupees, a modest squeeze for exporters with the reported US-India tariff step still pending for around October 18. Gold eased to $4,166 an ounce, down 3.85% since September 15 but still historically high and inside the band that reaches jewelry cost rather than stones, while the shekel held flat.
JIS Fall opens tomorrow in Miami, October 16 to 19, the first dated test the board has been waiting on and the earliest live read on US holiday-season demand. Behind it the Dubai cluster fills October 26 to 29 with the Dubai Diamond Conference and JGTD, before De Beers' October sight on October 26 to 30 gives the quarter's clearest signal on rough pricing and the October RAPI lands in early November. Two watch items still carry over unconfirmed this morning: Botswana's response on the De Beers stake, flagged for mid-October, and the reported US-India tariff step for around October 18.
